This talk explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) for burn scar scoring
and wound classification, emphasizing that these AI methods can also be applied to
other types of scars and wounds. It covers how advanced machine learning
algorithms and computer vision techniques can be used to accurately assess the
severity and progression of burn scars and wounds. The discussion includes the
development and implementation of AI models trained on clinical datasets,
highlighting their potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline clinical
workflows, and improve patient outcomes. Additionally, real-world case studies and
recent advancements in AI technology are showcased to illustrate the practical
benefits and challenges associated with integrating AI into burn wound care and scar
management practices.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY
Surgical site infection is the most prevalent and expensive complication associated with modern surgery. The existing approach for infection prevention relies on presurgical skin decolonization via aseptic skin washes. These washes, however, rely on harsh chemicals, such as chlorhexidine and iodine, that can be highly irritating and damaging to patient skin. Despite the implementation of these aseptic solutions, certain patient populations continue to remain at higher risk of infection, such as pediatrics, obese patients, and diabetics. Furthermore, novel approaches are necessary to elevate the quality of care for physiologically atypical patients. Here, we present an innovative strategy to surgical site infection prevention that leverages a novel molecule with dual anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits, which is termed panthenol citrate. Panthenol citrate is a novel compound based on naturally occurring precursors panthenol and citric acid, which are common components within skin cleansers, lotions, and creams. The anti-inflammatory properties have been demonstrated as highly beneficial in multiple animal models for wound healing and elevating skin health. In this presentation, we discuss why anti-inflammatory properties are beneficial for infection prevention as well as wound healing, especially for patients that remain the most vulnerable to infection.
