Diabetes is a complex chronic condition that requires ongoing management and care, and the burden of the disease is disproportionately borne by underserved populations, including low-income individuals, racial and ethnic minorities, and those living in rural or remote areas. It is crucial to address the significant health disparities related to diabetes that exist in underserved communities worldwide.
The program's primary objective is to provide health providers in underserved communities with virtual education and training to improve their ability to manage diabetes in their patients effectively. The program will focus on planning, implementation, outcomes assessment, and biomedical education to ensure that health providers have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide high-quality diabetes care.
One Guild has recently established a new partnership with the University at Buffalo's SUNY Center for Integrated Global Biomedical Sciences (CIGBS) and the ReThink Western New York Community Health Collaborative. The vision is to develop a unique opportunity that will provide students and faculty with experiential learning projects focused on planning virtual educational programs related to diabetes and its complications. OneGuild is committed to advancing research and innovation in diabetes care worldwide.
The ReThink Western New York Community Health Collaborative was formed in early 2020 to bridge the community, businesses, and schools with primary care sites, hospitals, universities/colleges, and health department programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent project, the Collaborative brought together community engagement programs such as the Niagara Falls Health Equity Task Force, Buffalo Urban Think Tank, Buffalo Center for Health Equity, African American Health Equity Task Force, and initiatives by Western New York STEM and the UB CTSI Community Engagement Core to design innovative approaches to promote community health in underserved areas of WNY.
The Collaborative is now developing projects that will build on the ReThink WNY Community Health Collaborative foundation and include many health priority areas in the region with an emphasis on diabetes, co-morbidities, and complications.
